These days it’s becoming increasingly harder to avoid leading a more sedentary lifestyle. With so many convenient technical advancements and more jobs requiring sitting behind a desk whether at an office or at home, now more than ever it is important to make sure we are taking proper care of our bodies with proper nutrition and a workout regiment. We have Roombas to vacuum our floors, grocery delivery with a touch of a button, and online shopping with same-day delivery options, and the list goes on but as we eliminate all of these small daily tasks without even realizing it we are moving our bodies a little less every day and forming more sedentary habits.
The Consequences
A sedentary lifestyle doesn’t just happen overnight, it is a habit that forms over time and can have some major health consequences. Recent studies have shown that those with more dormant behaviors have a doubled risk of weight gain and develop serious chronic illnesses such as diabetes, heart disease, and even dementia. Also named the “sitting disease” it has even been proven to be a leading cause of anxiety and depression, various forms of cancer amongst many other ailments.
How does this lifestyle start to affect your body negatively? By burning fewer calories you are more susceptible to weight gain, by not using your muscles not only do you lose strength and endurance but you also start to develop weaker bones which can lead to osteoporosis. This weight gain and inactivity can lead to poor blood circulation, hormonal imbalances, a weakened immune system, and even inflammation.
