It's Never Too Late: What Coaching Women in Their 60s and 70s Taught Me
The saddest sentence I hear in my gym is a quiet one: "I think I've missed my window."
A woman says it half-joking, but she means it. She's 67, or 72, and somewhere along the way she decided that getting strong was something for younger people, and that her chance had passed. I understand why she believes it. Almost nothing in our culture tells a woman in her 70s that she can start something new with her body and be genuinely good at it.
So let me be the one to tell you the truth, after years of coaching women exactly your age: you have not missed your window. In many ways, this is the most important window you'll ever have.
The women who taught me this
One of my members started with me at 79. She'd never thought of herself as "a gym person." Today she trains three days a week, her balance and bone density have improved dramatically, and she moves through her day full of energy. Another started at 69 and has since released nearly 50 pounds, built lean muscle, and stands taller than she has in years — and honestly, the confidence is the part she talks about most.
These women didn't have some secret advantage. They just started. They walked in nervous, let us meet them where they were, and kept showing up. Their bodies did exactly what human bodies are designed to do at any age: they got stronger.
Starting where you are is the whole point
You don't need to arrive fit. You don't need to know a single exercise. You don't need to be able to get down on the floor, or lift anything heavy, or keep up with anyone. Every movement we do can be scaled to your body, your joints, and your history. Nervous knees, a cranky back, a shoulder that doesn't love certain angles — that's not a reason you can't train. That's just information your coach uses to build your plan.
The only thing you truly need is to begin. Fitness isn't a prize you earn before you're allowed in the door. It's what happens after you walk through it.
What you get back is bigger than fitness
Yes, you'll get stronger. Your balance will improve, your bones will thank you, and everyday life will start to feel easier. But the thing that surprises women most is the confidence — the way it spills out of the gym and into the rest of their lives. And the sisterhood: a room full of women who understand exactly where you're starting, cheering for every small win like it's a big one, because it is.
