Taking a GLP-1? Don't Lose Your Muscle Along With Your Fat.
GLP-1 medications like Ozempic®, Wegovy®, Mounjaro®, and Zepbound® have become one of the biggest topics in health and fitness. Some people swear they've changed their lives. Others stop taking them because of side effects. Some maintain their weight loss, while others regain much of the weight after reducing or stopping the medication.
No matter where you stand on GLP-1s, there's one thing that deserves far more attention than it gets:
At Lana's Barbelles, that's the conversation we wish more people were having.
Weight loss isn't always fat loss
Most people step on the scale, see a smaller number, and celebrate. But the scale can't tell you what you lost.
When you lose weight quickly, your body doesn't just burn fat. Unless you're giving your muscles a reason to stay, you can lose valuable lean muscle right along with the fat.
That's a problem, because muscle isn't just about looking toned. Muscle is living tissue that helps regulate your metabolism, supports healthy blood sugar, protects your joints and bones, improves balance, and allows you to stay active and independent as you age.
For women over 40, preserving muscle becomes even more important — because we naturally lose muscle as we get older.
The missing piece of many GLP-1 journeys
Many people focus almost entirely on the medication. Very few focus on protecting the body that's changing.
Strength training sends your body a clear message: "Keep this muscle. I still need it." Without that message, your body may decide that muscle is expendable.
The goal shouldn't simply be to become lighter. The goal should be to become healthier, stronger, and more capable.
Why strength training matters
Strength training while losing weight can help:
- Preserve lean muscle mass
- Support a healthier metabolism
- Improve insulin sensitivity
- Strengthen bones
- Improve balance and coordination
- Reduce the risk of falls as you age
- Increase energy and confidence
- Help support long-term weight maintenance
The scale doesn't measure strength
The scale doesn't know if you can lift your grandchild. It doesn't know if climbing stairs has become easier. It doesn't know if your back pain has improved. It doesn't know whether you're becoming stronger or weaker. It simply measures body weight.
At Lana's Barbelles, we're interested in something much bigger than a number. We're interested in helping women stay active, capable, confident, and independent for decades to come.
Protein matters too
Many people taking GLP-1 medications notice a dramatic decrease in appetite. While that can make weight loss easier, it can also make it harder to eat enough protein.
Protein provides the building blocks your muscles need to repair and maintain themselves. Strength training and adequate protein work as a team — one without the other is far less effective.
What happens after the medication?
This may be the most important question of all.
Whether someone stays on a GLP-1 long-term or eventually reduces or stops the medication depends on many individual factors, and should always be discussed with their healthcare provider.
But one thing is true regardless of the plan: the habits you build while you're losing weight matter. Many people find that maintaining weight loss is much more challenging if healthy habits weren't established along the way.
That's why we encourage every woman to use this time to build habits that will continue long after the prescription changes. Those habits include:
- Strength training regularly
- Eating enough protein
- Staying physically active
- Building consistent routines
- Focusing on long-term health instead of quick fixes
Medication may be part of the journey. Healthy habits are what carry you through the rest of your life.
Muscle is your retirement account
One of our favorite ways to explain muscle is this:
Every strength workout is another deposit. Every pound of muscle you preserve today helps support your future. It keeps your metabolism healthier. It protects your bones. It improves balance. It helps prevent falls. It allows you to travel, carry groceries, play with your grandchildren, and continue living independently.
The scale won't do those things. Your muscles will.
Our philosophy at Lana's Barbelles
People often ask us what we think about GLP-1 medications. Our answer is simple.
We believe every woman deserves honest information and support as she works with her healthcare provider to make the best decisions for her own health.
Our role isn't to tell you whether you should or shouldn't take a medication. Our role is to help make sure that if you're losing weight, you're also building strength, protecting your muscle, and investing in your long-term health.
And that's something no prescription can do for you.
If you're taking a GLP-1 — or simply beginning your weight-loss journey — we'd love to help you build the strength that supports your success for years to come. Your future self will thank you.
